A strike team made up of five tankers and a bulk-water carrier was deployed from the Victor Harbor CFS Group just prior to 4am to a scrub fire caused by a lightning strike near Delamere on the south coast. The Victor Harbor strike team included about thirty CFS volunteers and appliances from the Waitpinga, Lower Inman and Hindmarsh Valley CFS Brigades. The strike team from the Victor Harbor CFS Group was one of several from around the Region supporting the crews from the local Southern Fleurieu CFS Group who were kept very busy with several fires occurring overnight.

The Delamere fire was one of three fires on the south coast and twenty in the State which was started by the dry lightning storms which moved through the State. The Delamere fire burnt through about 30 hectares of Stringy Bark scrub near Range Road and Range Road West. Multiple spot fires also occurred ahead of the main fire caused by burning brands driven by strong winds. These spot fires were able to be quickly brought under control by ground crews.

The challenge and danger for fire crews responding to such fires at night is appreciable, given the difficulty of determining access and identifying the extend of area being impacted by fire, due to the often unknown lay of the land.

Later in the morning at 8.54am, a further appliance from the Lower Inman CFS brigade was responded to Carrickalinga, the site of on of the lightning strike overnight. Strong winds delayed this response blowing over a large tree which blocked the Inman Valley Road.

Members of the Victor Harbor Operational Support Brigade also supplied several trained radio operators to the Incident Management Team (IMT) established at the Southern Fleurieu CFS Group base.
