Cadets - Victor Harbor CFS

The need was indentified to promote CFS to younger people in the area & get them involved. Cadets are an important part of the CFS as they are the future firefighters & leaders for the CFS organisation & for our community.

Victor Harbor Group cadet program started in 2010 with only 4 cadets & 4 leaders and has plus the basic firefighting skills.

Cadet training is normally held at the Victor Group Base (Hindmarsh Valley Station) but sometimes may be moved elsewhere locally. continued to grow to now over 10 cadets & 6 leaders.

Local girls & boys from the age of 12 – 18 years are given the opportunity to learn new skills & make new friends (parks & ovals) Cadets normally train fortnightly during school terms only on Wednesday nights from 6.30 sharp – 9 pm.

Occasionally training or social activities may be held elsewhere or at different times. Notices will be sent home with the cadet for the approval of parents & guardians to be signed ahead of these events.

CFS Cadets training is at no charge and most of the protective clothes & equipment are supplied. (overalls , helmet & gloves) – to be returned when leaving CFS. Cadets are only requested to supply their own sturdy footwear consisting of enclosed leather boots. (due to fast growing feet )

What do cadets learn?

  1. Cadets learn about communications & radio techniques, basic first aid & map reading.
  2. Cadets learn about work other emergency services do and get a chance to meet / train with other agencies such as SES , MFS , SAPOL & SAAS.
  3. Cadets meet other cadets from other areas and get involved in joint CFS activities & camps.
  4. Cadets have games & social nights such as movies & pizza / 10 pin bowling / laser skirmish / indoor go-karting to name but a few.

Not all learning – lots of fun stuff too !!
